Macbeth - Noble Soldier to Bloody Tyrant The purpose of tragedy is to arouse in the audience emotions of fear or pity, and to produce a catharsis-a relieving cleansing-of these emotions. Macbeth is the most horrific of Shakespeares tragedies because the protagonist commits such bloodthirsty acts. Apart from on the battlefield, however, this brutality is not evident when we first meet the hero. General Macbeth is a man of military and political importance, the heroic Thane of Glamis and potential heir to the throne of Scotland. By the end of the play he is an entirely different person than he was in the beginning. In the beginning he is a heroic, decent, and noble soldier, but by the end of the play he is a bloodyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Aristotle also taught that the protagonist should face his or her fate with courage and nobility of spirit. We recognize the fall into tyranny of the deluded Macbeth, driven by an uncontrolled ambition, persuaded by an equally ambitious wife. Also, the weird sisters or th e instruments of darkness (I.iii.135) play on Macbeths tragic flaw as he makes decisions sealing his own destiny. (Their power is debatable, but he clearly ties their words to his own fate.) He may blame the witches, but he made his own choices and knew the consequences. Although he-and Lady Macbeth-have apparently contemplated the idea before now, their prophetic words stir his ambitious soul. In the end, everyone dies. Imagery of the grim reaper and death echo throughout all of human culture. Death is taught as something to be feared and avoided. However in the end, everyone will still die. Anatole Broyard analyzes his confrontation with his own mortality and how he came to accept it in his essay ââ¬Å"Intoxication with My Illnessâ⬠. By confronting his own mortality, Broyard learns more about life and gains a greater appreciation for it. Is it only possible to learn to appreciate our lives through a confrontation of our own mortality and suffering? Broyardââ¬â¢s confrontation with death begins in the traditional panic and despair. Queen Gertrude, Hamlets mother, is perceived by most as a loving yet mysterious figure throughout the play. Her innocence is not only questioned by Hamlet in Act 3 scene 4 (A bloody deed-almost as bad Mother, as to kill a king and marry his brother)but by the readers as well. Many readers believe the final scene, in which Gertrude drinks the poisoned cup, is the clue to determining her guilt or innocence. Perhaps Gertrude drank the poison out of guilt from her role in her first husbands death. Its possible that she drank the wine without knowing that is would be fatal. It all depends on how the reader interprets one of the last things Gertrude says in the play, I will my Lord, I pray you pardon me. Cladius is often thought of as the villain of the play. Shakespeare portrayed Cladius as a true politician-tactful, manipulative and deceitfully clever. At some point or another, this task will require some sort of disciplinary action. In years past, schools used corporal punishment to discipline children. Studies show that in todays society, corporal punishment does more harm than good here in the United States. Many states have recognized the problems associated with corporal punishment and have begun to phase it out of their system. Still, many states especially those in the South, hold on to this outdated form of discipline. Research, coupled with the opinions of most health care professionals, indicate that there is a problem. Corporal punishment is not an effective form of discipline in schools. Discrimination is a key problem in the use of corporal punishment. According to Kreck, Research has shown that boys are hit more often than girls; disabled students are hit more often than students who arent handicapped. Minority kids are hit more often than Anglo students. In fact, black children are three times likely to be paddled than white children (Paige, 26). Corporal punishment can also be implemented to an abusive level. There is a fine line between corporal punishment and abuse. No one can agree on when corporal punishment begins to become abuse (Pride, 8). All states have rules that are supposed to regulate corporal punishment but in many cases these rules are easy to get around. For example, most laws require that a witness oversee the spanking. The witness is usually another teacher or faculty member, often with the same viewpoint as the disciplining teacher (Hagen). Obviously this taking sides can lead to an unfair situation for the child. Another factor in the misuse of corporal punishment is that it is, or shall we say should be, a violation of the childs rights. According to Carol Kreck, most states have laws forbidding the hitting of animas, prisoners, soldiers, and mental patients. It is astonishing that our children dont share these same rights. Secondly, corporal punishment teaches the wrong lesson. According to Dr. Gil Simon, a Sacramento pediatrician, spanking teaches children that violence solves problems and stimulates more bad behavior (Perkins). Children who are spanked also learn that hitting is an acceptable form of expressing anger (Haynes, 65). One might wonder if this might be the root of the violence problem in our society. If it is not the root, it is definitely an underlying factor. In recognition of this, many national organizations oppose corporal punishment. According to Kreck, these include The American Academy of Pediatrics, The National Education Association, The National Parent-Teacher Association, The American Bar Association, The American Medical Association, The Easter Seals Society, The National Coalition to Abolish Corporal Punishment in Schools, as well as many unnamed others. Dr. Irwin Hyman, Director of The National Center for the Study of Corporal Punishment and Alternatives adds to the argument against corporal punishment by stating that, Hitting merely suppresses behavior. It gets results in the short run, but doesnt teach morality. It only teaches fear (Perkins). Corporal punishment is also damaging to children. Since all children are different, it is impossible for an educator to know how hard to hit a particular child. There is no ground, no horizon, no sky and no perspective. Accordingly, there is no conflict, and a convincing expression of a supernatural space is achieved. The painting has a couple of oddities with the boy pointing to the seal on the St. Stephen's robe but his other hand is sort of contorted. She was the basis of many of his stories. Later, his parents would have another daughter, Henrietta, but the family was struck by tragedy when she died of pneumonia. Henrietta Sr. and Theodor Robert reacted to this disaster by investing all of their love and focus into their remaining two children (Levine, 9). The Geisels, though they were not wealthy, lived a comfortable life.
